Blessed to be a blessing

David and I just returned from an amazing week at the Chautauqua Institution in western New York. Our week was filled with inspirational worship services, profound lectures, superb concerts, creative art, and incredibly interesting people — all in an idyllic 19th-century setting — an American Utopia. Please allow me to share just one of the many ways we were blessed and inspired by our week at this unique place called Chautauqua.

Every day at Chautauqua began with a worship service. The service was traditional in design with a beautifully played organ prelude, a call to worship sung by the choir, a rousing opening hymn sung by the 3,000+ member congregation, responsive readings, prayers, scripture readings, a carefully chosen and wonderfully presented choral anthem, an incomparable sermon, a moving closing hymn, and an incredible organ postlude from the classical or repertoire or one improvised on the final hymn. What a blessing it was to be a member of the Chautauqua congregation for six worship services.

Yes, I was richly blessed by being a worship participant. A participant in six prayerfully designed, carefully crafted, lovingly presented worship services. It was a balm, a joy, and an inspiration, leaving me with the knowledge that God is with me and among us every day.

Part of the Snowman Foundation
Play It Forward has been honored to touch hundreds of lives this year, through the thoughtful donations of instruments and sponsorships and we would like to take a moment to celebrate the families, schools, churches, and music outreach programs that are keeping music alive for our youth. We are so proud to support them through your generous donations of instruments and giving.

We are now working towards building a scholarship fund that will provide musical instruments and scholarships for music lessons tied together, offering students with desire and talent, but no financial means, to finally have the music lessons that have only lived in their dreams. As we continue to give the gift of music to our community, we see students thrive and music programs grow and we invite you to partner with us.

Your generous donations of instruments and scholarship funds will go to help countless students in ways that we can only imagine. It has become increasingly difficult because of safety and financial issues to get practice time at churches for my younger organ students.

Through Play it Forward, I have been able to procure home practice organs for three deserving hard-working organ students from my studio.  What a gift to them and to the churches they will one day serve.

Music has the power to change the life of one child, that we all know. But the power to create goes far beyond the development of one individual student. It ripples out into the community spreading itself without limitation, for music is a respecter of no person. And that may be its greatest power, that its boundaries are indeed limitless.
Sara Levy
In our Bach and Sons program, we talk about Sara Levy who was the patron keeping all of the JS Bach music from being destroyed. She also supported CPE Bach to enable him to teach. This is what patrons of the arts do, they collaborate with artists/musicians to ensure the arts of the past can be shared with audiences of the future.

Look for connections

Excerpted from Wynton’s 12 Ways to Practice, from Music to Schoolwork

Look for connections: No matter what you practice, youʼll find that practicing itself relates to everything else. It takes practice to learn a language, cook good meals or get along well with people. If you develop the discipline it takes to become good at something, that discipline will help you in whatever else you do. Itʼs important to understand that kind of connection. The more you discover the relationships between things that at first seem different, the larger your world becomes. In other words, the woodshed can open up a whole world of possibilities.

And yet more ways to practice

Excerpted from Wynton’s 12 Ways to Practice, from Music to Schoolwork

Think for yourself: Your success or failure at anything ultimately depends on your ability to solve problems, so donʼt become a robot. Thinking for yourself helps develop your powers of judgment. Sometimes you may judge wrong and pay the price; but when you judge right you reap the rewards.

Be optimistic: How you feel about the world expresses who you are. When you are optimistic, things are either wonderful or becoming wonderful. Optimism helps you get over your mistakes and go on to do better. It also gives you endurance because having a positive attitude makes you feel that something great is always about to happen.
