Chautauqua flourishing and moving forward

In its heyday in the 19th century, Chautauqua was one of the most important cultural institutions of its time, with an incalculable effect on the dissemination of education and culture in the United States, particularly for women, who had little access to higher education. Today, after exhausting its original mission, Chautauqua, almost incredibly, has carried on, averting financial crises, and prospering.
A Sample Day
On a recent Saturday, there was a Catholic Mass in the Chapel of the Good Shepherd and Jewish Services in the Hurlbut Church, followed by bridge instruction in the Women’s Clubhouse and an Alumni Association ”Great American Picnic.” Bard O’Neill, director of Middle East Studies at the National War College, was lecturing on Islamic fundamentalism to a group in the Hall of Philosophy, built to resemble the Parthenon.

Every 15 minutes or so, the bells in the campanile of the Miller Bell Tower chimed, sometimes pealing out hymns. Down by the lake, children played not far from Palestine Park, a contour model of the Holy Land, with a pond representing the Dead Sea, and a trickle of water the River Jordan. At McKnight Hall there was a School of Music voice master class, while at the Chautauqua Center for the Visual Arts there was a demonstration, ”Making an Adirondack Twig Basket.” Later, there was another Mass in the Hall of Philosophy, and a choir rehearsal for Sunday services.

Religion is fundamental to Chautauqua, although many residents do not attend church. Most Chautauquans are Christian, and about 20 percent are Jewish.

”There is an inarticulated awareness of the sacred and the holy in the whole community because of the natural surroundings and because of the created human beauty,” said Ross Mackenzie, director of the department of religion. ”Civil discourse, friendship, dance, music, all of these are expressions of human created beauty. They all give us an awareness of the holy.’
