Jeannine – the church organist

They can be quiet, somber, joyful, powerful, contemplative, encouraging, exciting and more. Since age 11 Jeannine has always played for church. One of the joys of her life, besides me, (what can I say, I’m a lucky guy) is to lead worship — to help a congregation come closer to the presence of God through their worship. The hymns and the texts are so powerful. It is only natural to augment the richness of the music and text with a creative approach and the power of the organ. I like to think that I’m fortunate to go to church every Sunday and have the best organist anywhere leading worship.

See, she wouldn’t say something like that. That’s why I’m writing this.

Jeannine’s story

BTW, I encouraged Jeannine to write her book called On the Heels of an Organist. You can read the full details of the briefcase and other stories in her book. There are stories of her experiences that she thought were dreadful that I thought were hilarious. You decide.

Take a big breath:…GO

High School in 3 years, on to college, people are moving too slowly. 3 years, enough of that, on to the MM degree and, okay, it took more than 3 years but let’s just say she finished her DMA in organ performance and music history in a timely fashion. Thank you very much! If you think there are times I look like I am short of breath, there’s good reason!

12:30 AM, it’s pitch black outside. The bright lights on the stage of Beall Hall at the University of Oregon seemed extra bright at that time of the morning. You could see the dust flecks floating down from the ceiling. The organ class and Jeannine are sitting on the stage, some students are lying on their backs listening. Truly world-renown organist, Guy Bovet, articulates what needs to be different in the technique of his class of organ students. She admits she never thought 12:30 AM classes would be part of the path to getting her music degrees. But it was, and to slightly understate it, Guy was yet another person who thought way outside-the- box and made life even more intriguing.

If I may, I’d like to say that if you want to see how a dissertation can come to life and become a riveting concert, come experience From Sea to Shining Sea.

David Interviews Jeannine

Hi, David here. We’ve interviewed MIPs (musically important persons) from all around the world. I was thinking, hey wait, we haven’t interviewed Jeannine. And she’s been around the world. So, whether Jeannine likes it or not I’m going to interview her. Yes, this is outside-the-box like all our other Promotion Music proceedings.

First, Jeannine said I had to make sure you know that she loves Promotion Music and performing and playing for church, but she loves me first. Okay that’s a good thing. I’ll put that down.

So, let me tell you the story of Dr. Jeannine Jordan from my point of view.

Imagine you’re 11 years old, it’s Sunday morning and you’re sitting down on the organ bench to play your first full service. There are 100 people waiting for worship to begin, none of them, okay maybe her Mom and Dad, are concerned about whether she is going to play well. That part is assumed.

The nod is given, and she starts the hymn introduction… It must have gone well because to this day her favorite part of playing for worship is leading the hymns. The mighty glorious, enduring, life-changing, profound hymns.

Thus, started Jeannine’s career as an organist. A career that would take her to 16 different countries from Austria and Australia to Zimbabwe to perform. Meeting people with amazing unbelievable stories and having experiences that most people only imagine.

MOM. Oops, Let’s go back to her Mom for a second. Where would we be without our Moms? She started Jeannine on the piano at age 4 and by the time she (Jeannine) was 6, Mom had pushed her out of the nest into the hands of Mrs. Ellington and other wonderful teachers. Even though pushed out of the nest, Mom was always there to encourage. Thanks Mom.
